How Our Statesville Dentist Straightens Your Teeth with Invisalign

If you’re one of the lucky (or unlucky) people who had braces as a teenager, you may recall all the negative aspects of wearing them: metal brackets irritating your cheeks and gums; difficulty brushing away food particles; and the inability to eat your favorite candies. Luckily, if you’re considering straightening your teeth now, all of these issues can be sidestepped with Invisalign aligners. In today’s post, our Statesville cosmetic dentist explains how we use Invisalign to give you a bright, straight smile with no brackets or wires involved.

Consultation Appointment

The first step in the process is scheduling a consultation appointment in which we determine whether Invisalign is right for you. Although the majority of mild misalignment issues can be corrected through Invisalign, some situations which are more severe will require a different solution. Your initial conversation will also be a good time to discuss Invisalign costs and formulate a payment plan.

Crafting the Aligners

Next, your Statesville dentist will take X-rays, pictures, and 3-D impressions of your teeth. After examining the movements of your teeth, he or she will map out a treatment plan that extends over a period of a year or more. After a brief waiting period, you will receive a series of custom-made clear aligners made of smooth BPA-free plastic.

Wearing Your Aligners

As you wear your aligners, your teeth will gradually begin to shift into the appropriate places. One big advantage of Invisalign is that the aligners can be removed to permit eating, brushing, and flossing. However, that same advantage can also be a disadvantage: since the aligners can be so easily removed, many patients don’t wear them as often as they need to in order to see results. It is for this reason that we don’t recommend aligners for children or teenagers.

Switching Out Aligners

Every two weeks, you will advance your teeth to the next stage of treatment by switching to a new set of aligners. Your dentist will see you for occasional checkups in order to monitor your progress.

Celebrate Your New Smile!

Finally, your teeth will have shifted into the desired position and it will be time to celebrate your new, straight smile. You will no longer need to wear an aligner during the day, although most dentists will recommend wearing a clear retainer overnight in order to prevent your teeth from shifting.
